The Quantity and Quality of Teachers: A Dynamic Trade-off
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the framework of dynamic general equilibrium OLG model we study the dynamics of the quantity and quality of teachers. They are jointly set by a government agency wishing to maximize the quality of basic education per student while being bound by teachers’ collective bargaining agreement which equalizes teacher pay. Our model features two stages of education: basic and advanced, the latter being required of teachers. The cost of hiring teachers is influenced by the outside opportunities that skilled individuals have in the production sector. We show that this factor strengthens in the process of endogenous growth and moreover that it pushes the optimal trade-off between quantity and quality of teachers in the direction of the former. Namely, the number of teachers hired will grow over time while their relative quality (but not the absolute human capital attainment) will decrease. Furthermore, we show that this evolution of human capital accumulation is accompanied by increasing inequality within the group of college educated workers as well as between it and the unskilled. The Quantity and Quality of Teachers
The paper addresses the two-fold rise in teacher-student ratio in the American K-12 school system in the post-World War II period accompanied by the evidence of a decline in the relative quality of teachers. We develop a dynamic general equilibrium framework for analyzing the teacher quantity-quality trade-off and offer an explanation to the observed trends. Our OLG model features two stages of...

Time, cost and quality are considered as the main components in managing each project. Previous researches have mainly focused on the time-cost trade-off problems. Recently quality is considered as the most important factor in projects success, which is influenced by time acceleration that is the less time is spent the more success is gained. In time-cost-quality trade-off problems, each act...
متن کاملModeling the Trade-off between Manufacturing Cell Design and Supply Chain Design
Nowadays, we are witnessing the growth of firms that distribute the production capacity of their products to a wide geographic range to supply the demand of several markets. In this article, the relationships and interactions between cell design and supply chain design are investigated. For this purpose, a novel integrated model is presented for designing dynamic cellular manufacturing systems ...

Is the Quantity-Quality Trade-off a Trade-off for All, None, or Some? Although the theoretical trade-off between the quantity and quality of children is wellestablished, empirical evidence supporting such a causal relationship − particularly on child health − is limited. We use two measures of child health to asses the quantity-quality tradeoff across the entire distribution. Using data from th...
